Review on PetSafe Efficient Extreme Weather Aluminum by Robert Berio

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I wish I had done this a long time ago! It needs the right tools to get it on the wall.

I replaced my old PetSafe single door dog door and wish I had done it a long time ago. The previous valve had a habit of not fully closing, essentially creating a wind tunnel in my house and making the air conditioning work harder than it should. I live in a relatively mild climate, but I was struck by the difference. I was never happy with the plumbing work done by the previous homeowner but didn't know how to fix the problem. I bought this door because the footprint was almost identical to the previous PetSafe door, so I had to do very little to enlarge the existing opening, which was a big plus. The difficulty was that the door was installed in the wall, not the door, so it took quite a bit of effort and a lot of power tools to frame it. I'm very happy with the results, I used lots of sealer and then primed and painted to seal it and luckily I was able to use a standard 2x4 to frame it. I used a handsaw, miter saw, electric drill, grinder and kreg to make everything possible. A few tips: 1). I had to drill some holes in the drywall and use screws to temporarily hold the underside of the 2x4 frame in place while I assembled the 4 pieces. 2). The Kreg attachment and pocket holes made it much easier to attach the frame to the wall. Kreg pocket screws help attach 2 pieces of wood together so I could do it without clamps.3). Adjusting the flaps after full installation made a big difference in how tight the seal was and how consistently the flaps closed fully. My flaps needed to be moved a little higher.4). It took a lot of bacon to get my dog used to the new door because you can't see through like the old one!
