Review on πŸ”Œ Soldering Practice Kit for Beginners: Etoput Electronics Tutorial by Sean Patel

Patience is the key.

A complex but remarkable device. The instructions were above average for a Chinese translation, but I learned a few tricks by trying different assembly methods. If you look at the bottom of the LED, make sure the leads are horizontal to each other and the anode (shorter) is to the left of the cathode (longer). Bend the anode right next to the LED case. Using needle nose pliers, hold the cathode so that the width of the pliers is between the LED body and the flared comb on the cathode. Bend the cathode over the needle nose pliers so that it is horizontal and forms a 90 degree angle with the bent anode. I added just one LED at a time to the acrylic mount and soldered each anode to the previous LED. I would adjust the cathodes so they are all parallel to the fixture before removing each row of four LEDs from the fixture. After all four rows of four LEDs were soldered to anodes, I placed all four rows in the jig and soldered the cathodes together. I placed the first 4x4 grid where the two wires touch the bottom of the STC chip. I soldered two internal cathodes from the "top" side of the board to just the IR sensor. This determined the height for the other 4x4 LEDs. A third hand tool was used to position each of the other three 4x4 LEDs.

  • The best in its niche
