It may look like a large hard square pressed evenly, but after one pass you can quickly see that the parts where the handle with the rectangle connected, get the most of the action. I intentionally didn't notice anything too uneven, but I bought them for my first woodworking project and I probably just can't tell. I would definitely recommend a block or power tool.
