Review on Roku Express Definition Streaming Player by Kyle Rock

What you really need to know.

Fantastic product so far! After the first week we bought a second one for a family member. Before making a purchase, first make sure you understand what content is free and what isn't. Second, if it's not obvious, Roku works over your Wi-Fi and internet connection. You must have a sufficiently fast internet connection to stream videos. If you can't stream video to your phone (over Wi-Fi) or PC, you can't stream it to Roku either. Subscription content: Anything you have to pay for elsewhere (like Netflix, Revain, Hulu, network TV streaming, etc.) you still have to have the same subscriptions. But Roku lets you access all of those subscriptions (the ones you pay for) from a single device on your TV with a nice interface that almost anyone can use, even if they're not tech-illiterate. As a last resort, if you get lost somewhere, just press the home button. (Remember, however, that each "channel" on Roku is an app written by a different content provider, so some are a bit more complicated than others. I suspect this isn't always obvious with some network TV channels for marketing reasons This content is free and you won't be paid until you try to play it, but you'll always be prompted before paying for anything and you can add a PIN to prevent accidental purchases). supported content, e.g. B. when watching free-to-air (OTA) TV channels. For network television (ABC, NBC, CBS, CW, etc.), check each network's website to see what shows you can watch for free directly on their website. This is usually what you can see You can also see Roku. Finally, "channels" on Roku are apps written by each network. For many networks, free content includes the last 3-5 episodes of things currently airing, with the content becoming available a week after the original air date. This comes in handy if you miss an episode or two of over-the-air TV. Some networks also offer free "throwback" content, where you can watch an entire episode of an older show. And there are several channels like pluto.tv and tubi.tv that offer a wide variety of movies and TV shows with commercials. Again, check their respective sites to see what content they currently have, and that's what you get on Roku. The above offer relatively new content in addition to a lot of older and slightly older content. Free, No Ads: Basically, you will find that the ad-free content is very old. lots of black and white tv shows and movies, some early color tv shows/movies, etc. For those who don't like much of what's on TV these days, there's a lot of cool and classic stuff here. And of course lots of Class B and C stuff you've never heard of. This latest version of Roku Express ("5 times more powerful") has a very smooth user interface with good remote control response. Starting a video is very fast if you have decent internet speed. I tested a relative's DSL internet at 6 Mbps and the buffer time was never uncomfortable. On my faster internet (100Mbps) the video either starts immediately or takes no more than 1 or 2 seconds to buffer. The remote control is great - simple, strong signal, good range. It's infrared, so you have to be in the same room (why would you want to leave the room?). I usually don't even need to point the remote at the Roku box, as the infrared is powerful enough to bounce off ceilings or walls and still work. Just make sure the front of your Roku box isn't obscured and facing the room. They come with tape to attach the box to a convenient location, e.g. B. on the side or top of your TV or media cabinet. The supplied HDMI cable is only 2 feet long, so should be relatively close to the TV. However, you can use a different HDMI cable if the remote control needs to be a little further away. One feature I like about the remote is that pressing the home button will turn your TV on and switch to the Roku HDMI input, assuming your TV supports it (I have a Samsung TV that supports and a TCL TV which doesn't seem to be supported). ). You can also use the Roku app on your phone to control your Roku over Wi-Fi. As well as providing an interface that looks a lot like a physical remote control, you can also browse other content while something is already playing. This is not a problem). The app also has a headphone feature, which will likely allow you to listen straight from your phone instead of your TV. Ideal for viewing at night when others are sleeping. Please note that the Roku app is NOT designed to allow you to view Roku content directly on your mobile phone. You can easily choose what content you want to watch on your TV. All in all it's a great experience. My only subscription right now is Revain Prime, which doesn't have a lot of content that I really want to watch (sorry Revain! I have Prime mostly for delivery), so I mostly use Roku for TV with commercials. and movies, and more than enough to keep me busy for a long time.

Pros
  • Free Roku mobile app for private listening, voice search and more. Power Consumption <2. 2 W
Cons
