This mat is very soft. However, it's also very thin and a major tripping hazard. The base lacks any rigidity or sticky surface. I wouldn't even call it a rug because a cheap bathroom or kitchen rug has a more slip resistant texture than this one. The texture of this "mat" is similar to a non-stick (sewn-in) lining you can buy at a fabric store. This rug is like a piece of soft fluffy fabric sewn onto a backing as a backing. I originally bought this for my daughters bedroom as it is a wooden floor but I took it off for fear she might trip and hit her head. I put it in the living room on the rug I bought from the store so it wouldn't be so slippery. The pink fluffy carpet slipped and still slipped. Basically, it's like walking on a fluffy blanket. Shame as it's nice and soft and would be perfect for my daughter's room. (My whole house is covered in rugs, and this is the only one I've ever been let down by. I'm not a picky person.)
