Nice belt, but far too big

I bought this for my wife. Together, we read multiple web pages and product descriptions to determine how to measure a belt, and came up with a 36 inch belt for her. The belt, when measured from the end of the buckle, to the opposite end of the leather is 42 inches, making it far too big. We'll be returning it, and trying a smaller size. It really is a nice looking belt, and seemingly well made.
