Set of 3 Beginner Chinese Paint Brushes

smaller than the tools used (although it's still important to use the best quality for which you have the means) and emphasizes the spirit of the artist and the skill of execution. This creed seems at odds with Western watercolor ideals and the commercial attitude of today, where many cannot aspire to quality supplies due to the scarcity and outrageous cost of "Artistic Grade" paints, brushes and paper. That being said, I bought this brush set after researching all the necessary materials for traditional Chinese ink painting and watching many tutorial videos online, especially those by Blue Heron Arts. Seeing that even such brushes could be so well shaped and used to create such wonderful artwork at a much lower price than what is considered "quality" sable brushes in traditional watercolor, I bought them without hesitation. together with suitable paper, ink stones and a sanding block. As you might have guessed, I was a complete novice when it came to oriental ink painting, so these brushes suited me. On arrival I found everything in order and securely packaged with minimal waste which is a plus. Due to the peach juice used, the brushes must first be soaked and "run in” during use in order to keep the fibers in shape until they arrive. With these brushes, the process was painless, unlike some of the other much more expensive brushes I've bought, and all three were ready to paint in under 30 minutes. After that, I thoroughly tested each brush to familiarize myself with its unique properties. The set includes a large soft goat hair brush, a stiffer wolf hair brush of the same size and a smaller soft hair brush for lines and details, also hard. To date I haven't found much difference from the larger brushes, they look very similar with less difference in hardness than water holding capacity. A softer goat hair brush can safely be considered a washing brush. The smaller brush is a delight for both mascara and western color as its natural bristles absorb enough water and provide a dense tip for fine detail. The ability of the brushes to hold so much water, combined with the thin rice paper, allows the water and the brush to control the most difficult aspects of properly understanding the art, but that is part of learning to paint with ink and the individual quality of each brush. Once I got used to the unique qualities of the brushes, I never found anything wrong with them, especially for the price on offer. For calligraphy harder brushes are better, but for painting (as stated in the product description, in the reviews above) they are more than enough for any beginner or as a cheap brush for any skill level.

Pros
  • 1 Soft Lambswool Brush: 1-1/2" bristle length and 5/16" diameter
Cons
  • not as thick as other brushes
