I read many reviews and decided to buy. I've used it 3 times in the last 2 weeks. As long as he's still alive. I think if you maybe be a little careful with opening and closing you will be fine. I think he's well built. Make sure you don't skip the "Before Use" instructions. It is very important to really let it warm up before using it. So the day before you're ready to eat your waffles, follow these directions and let them stay high to "cook" any impurities. But it is also used as a spice for dishes. If you've ever used cast iron, think about it this way. And it will smoke like they said. I read so where someone said it gets very hot so I cook with mine on the stove. When I first heated it up and it started smoking, I put mine on the stove and turned on the vent. No problem. The next day I wiped the plates with a damp cloth. When I was ready to cook the waffles, I followed the directions but let them continue to heat after the initial green light went out. It must be very hot for best results. I started on the third cup of batter and it wasn't enough. I tried a whole cup and it was too much. I've had pretty good success with 3/4 cups. It's hard to say how much. But don't press down from the top as the waffle expands or you'll push the batter out. If you let it get nice and hot, they'll still cook the slightly open top very well. I made my own batter and used biscuit. Biscuit won the award at my house. Big fluffy brown waffles with a crispy crust and a soft center. I recommend this waffle maker.
