new for GPS and marathon

Take on the daunting task of preparing for the New York City Marathon. This point caught my eye when I was looking for a pedometer that accurately measures distance. Having only been using the device for two weeks I would list the following: Β· Pros: 1. Easy to use - press a button (2-5 minutes after the initial GPS signal fix) and the device is ready to use. In both of the areas of northern New Jersey where I use my device, it finds a signal within 5 minutes as I stretch. If it loses the signal it will recalibrate when it finds it again so I don't lose much on the mileage log.2. Variety - no more distance measurement in the long-distance car. Now I can just take off and explore - it's great that I can just look down and see distance, time and my average speed. 3. Waterproof - Essentially waterproof (as it says) so sweat and a bit of rain shouldn't damage your $100 training shoe. 4. Training Log - Those who need to download information can quickly check their progress and remove unnecessary mistakes or errors. Batteries are a personal preference, I like the AAA options - you don't have to worry about charging time or you can just use rechargeable batteries and always have 2 ready in case of an emergency.6. Value - At this low price it's worth a try but keep your box and receipt in case the signal doesn't work in your area. Β· Cons: 1. Signal - If you are running cross-country or in town, signal can be an issue. It has been observed that dense tree canopies or tall buildings can block the signal. It picks up the signal and recalibrates, but it might not be able to if you're walking through a tree-covered park/path the whole time. Maybe Fortex would be better suited for trails?2. Basemap - dotted map navigation in the form of "breadcrumbs" - more of a gimmick. I'm not sure I can find my way back using the simplest map information. But it's actually a GPS for tracking running and cycling information, not for finding yourself. If you want a true navigation system, you need a more advanced and expensive part.3. Shipping - Revain took over 2 weeks and still hasn't shipped. Went to seller and shipped the next day. Overall it's worth the money for your workout - it helps keep your runs fresh and being able to check your stats is amazing. Using the Forerunner is addictive and now as valuable as my MP3 player when I run. Hopefully it's running through November and beyond! Good luck and healthy running.

Pros
  • Retrace steps to trailhead or return to regular routes for regular variations
Cons
