These are great all-round boots for just about anything: hiking (but probably not heavy hiking), town wear, lawn mowing, vacations, any time of the year. NB discontinued it for a couple of years and then brought it back. Outsole with excellent grip (see note below), good heavy leather, waterproof membrane, comfortable. The only downside to these boots is that I carry a tube or two of suitable glue with me so I can re-glue the soles if needed. Each of the first 5 pairs (and they also put the same sole on their 1569 boots which I also own but still prefer the 978) had the sole glued a few times in different places but they continue to work well, until you do it. The only other issue is that the new boot is very nice, but the look ages much quicker than you might expect - the leather discolors, fades, loses its appeal, even with quality cleaners and treatments - the 978 makes up for it quicker than The 1569 Two of the six pairs I still own are now used exclusively for gardening, car washing and other household chores but are still serviceable and useful.
