A friend from Europe recommended them as a cheaper alternative to winter tires. While driving a rear wheel drive car or other car with summer/racing tires in the snow you might not want to do this, but these socks can really get you out of some sticky situations. I have a very short commute to work. (2.5 km) and that's why I didn't want to buy winter tires, especially since I can work from home even on heavy snow days. my office (no snow expected in the morning but 10 inches when you get home). I tested them in about 4-5 inches of snow where, under normal circumstances, my car would (literally) slide off the road even when stopped. I could drive safely and couldn't believe the difference. For rear wheel drive vehicles you need to buy 2 sets - for all 4 wheels. As stated in the product description, they should not be used as a permanent alternative to snow tires. I only used them for short distances and they worked great. They're probably just as reliable for long rides, but since they're made of cloth, they'll wear out immediately if you ride on dry pavement.
