You can save a lot of money by using regular (cheap) AA NiMH batteries. The device normally refuses to charge them, but you can trick the Garmin Oregon 600 into thinking you have a Garmin custom battery by placing a small piece of plastic under the batteries in the battery compartment. There is a small black rubber button in the middle of the battery compartment. If you put a thin piece of plastic on that button and then put batteries on top of it, they'll hold the piece of plastic in place and it will hold that button down, causing the device to think you've wasted a small portion. Good luck with the special battery pack that charges the batteries while it's plugged in. I cut a rectangle about 1" x 0.5" out of clear plastic clamshell packaging. The batteries I use are Eneloop NiMH AA batteries. Otherwise there is no difference between a Garmin battery pack and any 2 good quality AA batteries.
