I was very happy to try this, I thought there was a chemical reaction between the marker and the heater that was causing the burning. That's not what's happening. Firewood does NOT burn. It's easy to use. Similar to using a marker with a stencil. These marks appear light orange in color on the wood, adding warmth and the light orange turning to a dark brown. It's just a color change. It does not stick to wood. I actually washed it off the tree by scrubbing it in the sink. If it was burned I wouldn't be able to wash it off. After that has been said. It's a great tool, easy and pleasant to use. Until you understand what it's like to use a marker and stencil. We have also found that the marker and paint run if not fixed with a heater immediately after painting.
