The bright orange really stands out on a black dog. A bit large for my well trimmed 60 lb dog. I ordered an 18" understanding that with an 18" neck it would attach in the center hole but it was a little loose and the end stuck right out after going through the large D-ring, as I tightened the collar. It's easy to cut a copy of the original rounded end with standard scissors. I used medium grit sandpaper to smooth the cut end of the embossed synthetic rubber/plastic which has a built in lighter inner core. I was able to cut the end an inch more symmetrically than the original end. I found this to be the only collar of its kind that didn't come with a warning against using it as a tie. The material is bulky and a little stiff, and I think the rivets are the weakest points, if any. My main reason for buying them was to use them on long walks in the rain and they performed well there. I don't know what the safety ring is for, but I use it to attach a dog handler license and only leave the D-ring free for attaching a leash or tether. I would not attach a leash or cable to a safety ring as it can partially twist and tangle around the dog's neck. Update 7th July 2015 I'm increasing my rating to 5 stars because time has proven this to be the best dog collar in over 40 years of dog ownership. The bright orange color has not faded at all. Despite the convenience, my dog has never slipped out of the collar to chase a rabbit, squirrel, cat, etc. when tethered while working in the garden. My well behaved companion still looks good in a choker. A refreshing bonus is that it's made in the USA.
