Review on SMC Networks SMCWUSB G 802 11B Wireless by Ryan Sandell

Windows 7 64-bit performance is sluggish

I bought this wireless USB adapter for Windows 7 64-bit (clean install) to connect to our internet router. I downloaded the latest driver from the SMC website to use on Windows 7 and everything looked fine at first. I've been using this adapter for about 2 months and its performance has been pretty erratic. After waking up from sleep I would say there is only a 50% chance that the adapter will reconnect. If it doesn't, do I have to go to Device Manager to disable and enable the adapter, or restart the computer. I know some computers have issues with USB devices and generally wake up, but I've tried following various troubleshooting tips I've seen online (to no avail). Other USB devices on the computer also have no problem waking from sleep, so I doubt this is the source of the problem. Aside from issues waking from sleep, I've had other random periods where the adapter goes offline and the only solution to reconnect is to restart the computer. The laptop next to my desktop stays connected all the time, so I know the problem is with the computer and not the router. Overall I was very disappointed with the performance of this adapter and am looking for a replacement that is more reliable. ***EDIT*** Added info below: WPA2 on router This weekend I switched the encryption on my router from WPA to WPA2. As a result, this computer intermittently but repeatedly freezes (blue screen) when accessing the Internet. The return to WPA seemed to restore stability. Just a word of caution if you plan on using this adapter with Windows 7 64-bit and WPA2 security on your router.
