Acetyl L-Carnitine is one of the supplements I give my 93 year old mother to reverse the effects of brain aging that causes dementia. Most supplements are various antioxidants that help protect brain cells and encourage new cell growth. It is an amino acid that is a protein building block naturally produced by the body and also found in food. Production of this protein decreases with age. Acetyl-L-carnitine is easily converted into acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter critical for learning and focus. Carnitine is a neuron activator and is essential for energy production by the mitochondria, the "powerhouses" of the cell. It transports fatty acids to the mitochondrial membrane where they are converted into energy and also helps remove waste products from the energy produced by the mitochondria.
