I received these trays primarily for use in an Old Fashioned jar. They have worked so well that I already have a second set and am giving it to other members of my family. Silicone makes removal easy and always performs; There are never unexpected surprises. And because of the mass and density of these large cubes, they last a lot longer. In fact, I could accidentally drink my entire first drink and use the same cube for my second drink. It melts nice and slowly, steadily as it goes. There's nothing worse than dousing your smoothie with fast-melting water provided by regular little cubes, or the layer that meltwater leaves on top if you chat a little between sips. I want the taste of a drink, not ice. So the shells themselves last longer as I dare you to tear the silicone. Exactly opposite or regular trays that are easy to hack/break with a little effort at those pesky cubes that won't solve. You don't have to keep them just for cocktails. Large cubes are also great for iced tea. Then you don't have to worry about small round pieces of ice choking on the little ones. You won't put these lobsters in your mouth. After a year of use, I still couldn't find any significant defects.
