My installation suggestion is to drill a center hole in the desired location and temporarily insert a D-ring plate. Mark and drill a screw hole. Install the assembly, then drill and install the remaining screws. Otherwise, the screw holes in the plates will be difficult to align. I placed the wide portion of the bottom plate to match the hinge side of the top plate's D-ring. Before drilling, make sure you are not too close to the cross brace under the deck. You can also apply some type of sealer/wood paint in the drilled holes before installation for extra moisture protection.
