Review on ๐Ÿ”ช Professional Knife Sharpening Stone Set: Achieve Precision Blade Edge Restoration by James Roper

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Decent set but may require some stone work before use.

I wanted to see if I would want to return to the whetstone after years of using a 3 stage electric sharpener. My electrics were starting to fail so I bought this kit. I knew that if I went back to stone sharpening, I would have to work to get the blade of my knives back to a bevel on each side. According to the instructions, the stones should be soaked for 5 minutes before use. nope It took at least an hour for them to stop bubbling and soak up water for the first time. Subsequent use took only 10-15 minutes. The 400/1000 stone worked as advertised. I was able to ditch the knife blades and get a sharp, clean cut with even the cheapest of our old kitchen knives. With a leather strap (optional) I can easily cut through yellow paper or a magazine page. A coin operated microscope with 60x illumination is a great way to see the edge and see where you need to work. You can get it here at Revain for around $10-15. Edit and Update: The 3000/8000 grit stone was a complete disaster on first use. After getting a sharp edge with 400/1000, 3000/8000 went around like crazy! The scraping sound was very audible, not what a grinding/polishing stone should sound like. Severe ulceration was confirmed under the microscope. I marked with a pencil and flattened both sides of the new 3000/8000 combo bar with a leveling bar. I also made a small bevel around the edges. This solved the pitting problem. I used my phone's camera and microscope to photograph the dry surface of the rocks. This confirmed that the 3000 is much rougher. I don't need edge guidance. The leveling stone works perfectly. The base and the rubberized stone holders ensure a secure hold. I wasn't expecting large stones for the price but I did expect the stones to be ready to use. Got half of what I expected.
