I have a new US standard 90+ efficiency oven that uses 4 inch filters. When I saw this reusable filter after using paper filters, I thought I could clean it as often as needed and save money. I used a filter with a MERV rating of 12. That's about how high I wanted to raise my stove because the higher the MERV rating, the more stress the stove has as it filters the air much more than the lower MERV ratings. This stress leads to overheating and wear of the components. Also, higher MERV ratings cost more so I looked into this to save a significant amount of money because although the filters were rated for 12 months I replaced them every 6. I installed a filter monitor that tells me how the filter is clogged. have and I have not received 12 months. More like 6. So when I got this filter, I didn't have the filter monitor installed. But shortly after I started the oven, I heard the crackling of tin. So I went ahead and installed the monitor, took out this filter, blocked the filter inlet and adjusted the filter monitor dial so it was mostly clean. I wanted to see where it was with no filter installed. Then I installed this filter and fired up my stove. The watch face left the charts to change the filter. It got fixed and crashed off the charts hard and fast meaning this filter was causing so many restrictions the fan motor was actually straining the sheetmetal trying to get air from everywhere and you could hear it popping as the sides sucked in. and again when the fan went out and it reappeared. In my opinion this would damage my oven prematurely. So I ordered MERV12 filters and installed them in my oven. When I turned on the oven, the scale barely penetrated the clean side of the gauge. Keep in mind that this doesn't compare to any filter at all. So I was expecting this to move to the clean side as it restricts air. He has to do his job. This is why it is important to replace them, as clogged filters put stress on the oven components. This filter was actually clean when I ran this test. Unfortunately I can't risk my oven. I can imagine the stress when it started to clog when it was causing such a strong suction when clean. Now when my filter monitor moves to the clean part of the filter on the dial, I know it's time to replace the filter and this happens about every 6 months. Too bad it wasn't a solution for me due to the cost of paper filters. But much less than a new furnace. I say it's well made and I expected years of use from it, so maybe it's more for less efficient stoves. The photo shows the pressure gauge without a built-in filter. When this filter was set, it went well beyond the charts on the right. The needle just hit the top right corner and the paper filter only moved halfway to the clean side. Big pressure difference. Too bad because it would save me money and still do the job of filtering my house air.
