This device is not meant for large diameter branches. The reason being that it does not open very wide. However, anything it can get its grip on it cuts effortlessly through. The ratchet mechanism sees to that. If you have never used a ratchet cutter you are in for a pleasant surprise. It cuts in increments; shifting "gears" so to speak until the branch is cut. My only complaint is with the handle's design. It has a separate hole for your index finger and a wider hole for your remaining fingers. I ended up with a blister from rubbing up against the plastic that forms the hole for the index finger. Some reviewers complained about a "pin" falling out rendering the shears useless. I believe what they are referring to is a screw with a hex nut that has the potential to loosen and fall out. Just be aware of that and tighten things should they loosen up.
