Small flash for Canon E-TTL cameras

I bought this flash to use with my Canon G1 digital camera. On Canon's latest range of cameras, Canon's 'EX' flashes offer a huge advantage as they offer E-TTL metering. Without tiring you out, the gist is that when you press the shutter button, the flash fires for a moment to allow the camera to measure the actual lighting and determine the best exposure, and then the flash fires again and takes the actual picture ( all in a split second). Unfortunately, if you don't have a Canon camera, you won't get E-TTL. Why is it important? Because it's metering the actual light, rather than estimating what might be needed or trying to turn the flash off mid-shoot if it thinks there's enough light. It's difficult, but believe me, your shots will be much better. The 220EX is now Canon's smallest and lightest model. You can choose other Canon models (380EX discontinued, 420EX, 550EX) and you get higher light output (so you can use the flash over 100ft) and pan/tilt so you can bounce the flash bounce. but at the cost of larger size, heavier weight, and higher cost. The 220EX also offers long battery life (check out Revain prices for Kodak Photolife batteries) - I seem to get over 300 shots from one AA set. And it also manages power by turning off the flash after inactivity. The 220EX makes sense for any small Canon camera, or even a larger one, where the photographer is less likely to use the flash beyond 70ft or use the flash bounce feature. If that sounds like you then buy this flash. This is the winner.

Pros
  • Flash output 250 to 1700
Cons
  • Doubtful
