Review on πŸ“… Palm Z22 Handheld: Perfect Companion for Your Daily Organizational Needs by Aaron Urena

I got what I paid for

I received a Z22 to replace a much used and loved Palm Vx that had a dead battery. I figured that thanks to advances in hardware over the past six or seven years, I'd be able to get a great machine at a reasonable price. God I was wrong. The biggest problem with the Z22 is that the screen sucks compared to the Vx. It's ugly to look at, the pixelation is obvious and the touchscreen capability isn't great. A lot of things I could do with my fingernail on the Vx require a stylus on the Z22. The color is nice, but crappy and uncomfortable to look at. I have to constantly fiddle with the contrast controls to compensate for different viewing conditions. and in bright sunlight it's basically useless. I prefer the four shades of gray Vx. I'm also annoyed by the lack of backwards compatibility: most of my old apps work, but a significant proportion (maybe 20%) don't. Some freeze the machine and require a reboot. I also expected to get better performance from a 2008 machine than a 2001 machine. With the exception of one application (CacheMate), the Z22 actually performs on par or *worse* than the Vx. In particular, Launcher III becomes noticeably slower. I love the extra storage but I've never run out of memory on Vx and the CPU is frustrating. After all, the sound stinks. The sounds aren't that great, and inside the hard "air case" I can barely hear any noise even at maximum volume. With the Vx, I was able to hear easily even in the clamshell hard case. In summary, the Palm platform is still great and the colors are fun, but if you order the Z22, be aware that you're getting a cheap device that limits screen corners and CPU power. If it's important to you, take something else. If you don't care about the screen being ugly and the machine being slow, the case looks good and easily fits in your pocket
