Review on Penn Plax Turtle Basking Platform by Carolyn Lawson

Revainrating 1 out of 5

This is a danger. Read this before you buy!

I have never given a 1 star rating. But I think it's very important that people know what they're buying when their pet's safety is at risk. And this tortoiseshell platform from Penn Plax is a hazard since it's being sold today. use as a ramp to a non-slip bathing platform. That's why I ended up choosing this one despite reviews warning that their turtles will eat artificial grass or that the green fibers will fall out and clog their filters. I took the initiative and smeared the edges with silicone, hoping this would help my tortoise. But the other day I noticed a huge green lump floating in the aquarium and realized with horror that it had eaten so much artificial grass and walked past it. So I wrote to the company what happened and asked if it was possible to just get the plexiglass ramp without the artificial turf. No Answer. I built my swim platform with this ramp. I tried to find another ramp of about the same size but again there is nothing else to buy. So I had to spend another $25 to order another ramp, which I'm about to disassemble. Only spent $50 on what ends up being a piece of 17 inch plexiglass that I cover with something else. Waterproof grip tape, soft kitchen shelf liner, plastic canvas embroidery mat, actually anything would be safer than putting this in your aquarium as- My suggestion if you end up buying this you are doing yourself (and your turtle!) a huge favor and Remove the sod and replace it with something else before placing it in the tank. Money, yes, but you don't want to risk your turtle getting a blockage that could potentially be fatal if it can't get past it. and dipped it in a bowl of water 5 days ago to see how it would hold up. At the moment it looks like it's still sealed and no water got under it so I think I'll give that a try. To be honest I feel at this point that it would be more economical for me to buy one of those nice custom tanks that come with the ramp and platform already installed. Not to mention less stress.
