It's easy to keep in working condition - ignore the bad reviews

Reading this it's surrounded by other one star reviews complaining that the locking mechanism weakens over time and slowly begins to withdraw when it is always supposed to block. That's true, but there is a very simple solution. Lay it on its side with the screws facing up and remove all 3 screws including the one in the middle. The case splits completely into two pieces (if you held it normally the sides would fall apart, but leave it where it sits on your workbench) so remove the top of the case (the side with the screws on it addressed to you) and keep it at your workplace for the rest. You'll see that the button you press is connected to a wedge that locks the band in place and has a spring (that won't come loose). The button is held at the top by a tiny metal bar that you look down on. Pay close attention to how the button, spring, shaft, and wedge line up so you can put them back in. Lift the button/wedge/spring off the stem and replace the stem in the bottom half of the case if it falls out. why it retracts itself: the tape slides through the mud. Take a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol and wipe dirt off the wedge. Using the cleaned wedge, slide the button back onto the shaft, press down on the spring with your finger and use the wedge to press it against the band. Put the top case back on, screw in the three screws and your band will work like new. This is truly a 5 star tape, I only gave it a 1 star rating so you can see the solution to a sea of people problem. I complain that it doesn't last (mine used weekly for 3 years) when you click other one star reviews. It's a "just in case" tool, you'd think people would be curious to see if they could fix it, but unfortunately not many of us are that curious. Either way, buy with confidence. This is great tape, just don't stretch it past 25 feet. And note, if you upvote this comment, it will appear on the first page where everyone can see it as the most helpful bad review.
