Review on πŸ“ Mediasonic ProRaid USB 3.1 10Gbps Dual Bay SATA Hard Drive Enclosure – USB 3.1 Gen 2 10Gbps / USB-C/USB Type C (HUR5-SU31C+) by Roger Gibbs

Poor case design makes it noisy and hot so make sure you at least spin the fan.

The thing does its job. I didn't have any USB drop issues like other reviewers with other Mediasonic RAID devices, but it could have been done a lot better to not make it so noisy and hot. The fan pushes air out of the case/away. from hard drives, but terrible case airflow and small fan make it useless; My drives easily reach 50-55C if I'm doing nothing but sequential writes. You'll get slightly better temperatures (and less noise) with the cover removed, but what's the point with a fan pushing air away from the drives? The funniest part is that I tore off the aluminum side panels on the top cover and found that there are square holes on the side. Mediasonic had to add mesh sides instead of aluminum sidewalls to allow for better airflow. What you actually need to do is unscrew and flip the fan so air is drawn into the case/towards the drives (the fan sticker faces the hard drives). Most drive cases with fans do this, so I'm not sure why Mediasonic forced the fan to push air out. It would be understandable if the case had vents somewhere on the front or side to draw in fresh air, but there are no vents/holes on the top cover unless you rip off the aluminum side panels. Anyway, my discs reached 42Β°C. when I flipped the fan and used the top cap. However, I found it worked best when I removed the top cover and flipped the fan to direct air to the drives. My discs get to around 37C on sequential writes when this is done. In case anyone is curious, this thing uses a dual SATA ASM1352R controller for ASMedia's USB RAID controllers. More expensive and well-known direct-attached storage devices like QNAP T02 and T04 also use the same RAID controller. it doubled in TR04 but I'm not sure how they connect the controllers to make them work as one as they claim TR-04 can use 4 disks as one volume. My point is if all you care about is value for money then go for it. It is much cheaper than QNAP brand DAS and uses the same RAID controller. I've never owned a QNAP RAID DAS, but it seems like you're just paying for a higher-end chassis design/quality.

  • New in my collection
