40 seems like a LOT. I will never need that many. I can give out some to my neighbors.These are necessary from time to time because the original washers may have aged and may not have the sponginess to prevent water bypassing the connection. Also, they may have simply fallen out and got lost.The first scenario is somewhat slow to occur, the second is sudden and very noticeable.In either case, simply insert into the female portion of the hose end or into your sprinklers, power washer, etc.Problem solved.The quality is good.Fitment is OK. These are rated for 3/4" garden hoses, so a 5/8" garden hose connection may be tight.Market priced.
