Review on ๐ŸŒ Stemedu VK172 USB GPS/GLONASS Dongle Module for Stratux, Windows 10 Linux Mac, Arduino Raspberry PI, Google Earth Navigation by Patricia Davis

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great little GPS receiver, perfect for use with Raspberry Pi.

First I want to get rid of the fact that I'm not an expert. Just use this for exact time, exact location and sometimes play around. , this module performed very well. And for $15, you really can't complain. The first GPS lock didn't last long at all which surprised me as most reviews said it would happen, my first lock lasted about 5 minutes. The module also seems to work without a computer as long as it is connected to a power source. So if you see a blinking green light, you'll know you've got some kind of GPS blockage. The quality of this blocking can be very high, but you must have blocked at least 2 satellites. I decided to try this on my Windows 8.1 PC so I downloaded the software and driver from the U-Blox website and then installed the driver and ran the software. I connected the GPS receiver to a USB extension cable and installed it side by side with a window. After about 5 minutes I saw a blinking light on the GPS receiver and a couple of satellites that were locked in the software. After about 10 minutes I had 7 blocked satellites and 10 were audible. Speed, altitude, and latitude/longitude fluctuated somewhat, but that's to be expected, even with today's cell phone GPS receivers. For a cheap little USB dongle I'd say it's very good! I should also mention that it was indoors, so no doubt I'll have better luck outdoors. After that, I connected it to the device I wanted to use it with, a Raspberry Pi 4, which was being used as a ham radio field computer. Once I hooked it up and set it up properly, I got a lock and an accurate grid locator, and more importantly, I got the exact time to the second, which is what I wanted since the Pi doesn't keep time itself, it does unless you use RTC. Overall, this USB GPS receiver works exactly as intended and actually looks pretty good all things considered. And for $15, you really can't beat it. Works very well and I'll probably buy a few more in the future. 10/10
