This nail finder comes with a 9V battery which is a big plus. I was confused about the operation until I looked at the manual. Press the device against the wall before switching it on. Turn it on, click "Scan" and wait for the beep. The device is then calibrated. They change the mode to detect studs behind 1/2", 1" and 1-1/2" thick walls. There is also a setting to detect AC power cords and live metal pipes. I have the AC and Metal modi not used. , but the position of the wooden posts was accurate.
