Revainrating 5 out of 5

The SR-9040 hits the spot for value and performance

Before I get started, let me tell you that it's important to read reviews carefully. Not all written reviews are created equal, as the content may raise more questions than it answers. For example, many people rate a product poorly because it was damaged in shipping. This is a shipping review, not a product making the review useless. A positive review with one word comments like "amazing", "amazing sound" etc is good but lacks the details of how to use it. Or a reviewer writes that he likes the speaker without any complaints, but only gives the product 3-4 out of 5 stars. and interprets how he hears different sound sources. If you're not one of them, their reviews won't be that helpful. In my case, I'm not one of them, so I'll use simple and clear language to help you understand this. So read reviews with critical thinking as a guide. Make a list of questions ahead of time before reading a review. Reviews that answer most, if not all, of your questions are the most helpful. The Definitive Technology SR-9040 surround speakers are fantastic. They have a unique design where 4 drivers are directed in two different directions, providing a more spacious sound field in terms of direction/reflection of all sound effects. Placement is important and should be about 36 inches off the ground, you can go a little further. also above. By "small" I mean a few inches, NOT a few feet, which defeats their purpose. Also, I don't recommend mounting them high in the high corners of the ceiling and tilting them down towards your listening position. These speakers are best suited for mounting on a wall, shelf or speaker stand using a 6x6 panel. You'll also need to invest in some good quality rubber feet (3 for each speaker due to its triangular shape). They are packaged very well and are quite heavy as the construction seems very solid. Piano finish is very attractive, but don't let it fall on the floor. They will break even if they fall from 3-4 feet as I learned the hard way. These speakers are not ported, instead using a sealed construction. Setting up my system: The system I'm working on is fully Def-Tech compatible. I have a BP 9040 (left and right), CS-9060 center channel, A-90 Atmos and SR-9040 surround acoustic modules with a 110W aYamaha RX-A1080 receiver. My bass calibration is set to a regular 80Hz crossover. I'm using Mediabridge 16 AWG speaker wire with banana plugs pre-installed. The range of these speakers is an impressive 50Hz - 30,000kHz, meaning the 9040 delivers very reasonable low frequencies with the persuasion of its 3.5in drivers. First, the SR-9040 are NOT ideal front (left and right) or stereo only speakers. Expression. That's not what they're here for. They are strictly for 3D surround sound effects with different sounds, with one exception that I will cover later. Movies: These speakers are a perfect match for any movie source, whether you're streaming or playing DVDs, Blu-Ray or 4K. etc. Shards of glass, gunfire, laser beams, ricochets, glass clinking, background noise such as crowds, traffic, etc., and falling grenades all sound and move with pin-sharp clarity. seamless difference. These speakers reproduce the best highs, mids and varied lows I have ever heard from a movie watching application. Watching concerts is a whole new experience as the 9040s deliver beautiful sonic movement and immersion. Music: As I said, these are not separate speakers for this source, BUT. Here's the exception I mentioned earlier. Stereo on a quality/capable AV receiver, I'm immediately struck by how seamlessly these speakers work with others, especially when listening to jazz, classical, R&B and rock. The highs are all crisp, crisp but not overwhelming. These speakers reproduce the appropriate mids and various low frequencies with great clarity, definition and blend. Studio and live recordings are interpreted with great balance and immersion in this special mode. Gaming: Both the Xbox One and the new X series sound fantastic as the 9040 delivers the same surround immersion during movie playback. I play a lot of World of Warships Legends, Madden 21, Forza 7, Forza Horizon 4, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed and Doom. Regardless of the sound content of the game, the SR-9040 creates an immersive experience for the player and/or listener. The price of each speaker is reasonable at this level, which I consider average. According to Definitive Technology, these speakers work very well with other current speaker lines, making them versatile throughout the Def-Tech line. Can these speakers be used with other brands? I don't know, but I will say that this question is probably subjective and based on each person's unique rumors and preferences. In other words, you will hear different opinions on the subject. The best way to find out is to give them a reasonable amount of time to test them out yourself so you can decide to keep them or return/exchange them within Revain's policy options. Having said that, I highly recommend Definitive Technology's SR-9040.
