Surprisingly sharp lens for FX and DX. AF is a screw drive mechanism, so AF will not work on lower DX packs. The autofocus is also slow, which is the biggest downside in my opinion. To switch from manual to autofocus, they have a built-in clutch mechanism that allows you to switch very quickly. Another big complaint I have is that the aperture is 3.5 or less at normal portrait distance. I was hoping I could use it as a portrait lens, but the aperture loss is killing me. If your subject is farther away you can shoot wide open at 2.8, but you won't be able to achieve that at a normal headshot distance. For weddings, the autofocus is too slow to use during a ceremony or reception, but I prefer the lens for ring shots and other detail shots. Bokeh is beautiful and pleasing. Build quality is much better than competing Sigma and Tamron models. It is very well built like all other Tokina lenses. It's a little more plastic due to the clutch mechanism, while everything else is solid metal. For macro, this is a must-have lens. For portraits the Nikon 85 1.8g Prime is better for you, you will be much happier.
