So far very good for camera and photo

I was looking for a macro lens to replace my old 60mm Nikkor lens that was given to my son. As I browsed existing Nikkor deals, the more affordable ones didn't get stellar reviews. I bought this Tokina on the strong recommendation of Ken Rockwell. Limited use so far, I like it. As with any macro lens, depth of field is limited, so aperture helps. Images are clear with accurate color reproduction. This lens has an aperture ring so it is compatible with 35mm cameras. it is a zoom lens. It's not…

Sharp and fast lens, nice smoothness when you want it. Great bokeh!

Sharp and bright lens. Excellent bokeh and macro. The only downside I have is that it's a little noisy but doesn't get in the way. Updated after a few months of regular use: the image of the bee with the macro is very close, no larger image. I'm a thrill seeker :) but I still had the hood on. I might even get closer. I have used this lens on the coldest winter days to capture snowflakes and on the hottest summer days to capture bugs and flowers and I love it! Just move in/out a bit to get the…

AMAZING lens for portrait and macro photography

I am a professional and former Nikon user. As a Nikon user, I have always used Nikon glass exclusively, with the exception of this Tokina. I decided to try this lens on the recommendation of a colleague and read several reviews online. Summary of my review. HOLY COW! This lens is very sharp! The 100mm focal length is not only great for macro shots, but also great for photographing people (see attached images taken with this particular lens). If you've read all the dyno testing information, I…

Good (not great) image quality at an affordable price

For me, third-party lenses have always suffered from being a step behind their full-size counterparts. I bought this lens because I didn't have $1,000 for a 105mm Nikkor that I wanted but couldn't afford. I put this lens on my Nikon D7000 and shot everything from flowers to bugs to portraits. Whether on a tripod, stopped down, or wide open and handheld, the images were just, uh, uh. I readily admit that I may have received a bad copy. I wanted to like it enough to keep it but to be honest it…

Not a versatile lens but great macro

Surprisingly sharp lens for FX and DX. AF is a screw drive mechanism, so AF will not work on lower DX packs. The autofocus is also slow, which is the biggest downside in my opinion. To switch from manual to autofocus, they have a built-in clutch mechanism that allows you to switch very quickly. Another big complaint I have is that the aperture is 3.5 or less at normal portrait distance. I was hoping I could use it as a portrait lens, but the aperture loss is killing me. If your subject is…

Best on the go Macro

I'll start with the obvious, mild at 2.8. Like many soft lenses at an open aperture. Which makes macro photography difficult without Speed Light+Light Distribution. Obviously it has a sharpness of 5.6, but I wouldn't shoot beyond f8 just because you definitely need more light. Don't get me wrong, this lens is amazing for what it can do on the road. Unless you plan to use it under controlled conditions. In this case it might be better to use an inverted prime number. The top image of the…

Great lens! Not really!

First of all I'm a Nikon employee so this review will focus on Nikon. Right out front: full-frame, 100mm macro for $349? Looked too good to be true. I was fully expecting to return this lens in a day or two because it was a cheap fake. It's cheap, but it's not fake. This is a good, solid lens; When delivered, it looks like a Nikkor lens in terms of design and weight. It is also well balanced in terms of weight. I have used this lens on my D3200, D7500 and D850; Even on my small 3200, the lens…

Exceptionally sharp

This lens is amazing! It's sharp like no other I've seen and beyond the frame (at least in my D7000). The ergonomics are great with the focus-locking mechanism, although you're forced to either use or remove the hood (the inverted hood isn't possible if you want to access the focus ring). Although the limit switch has only two positions, it allows operation at three ranges of distances: full range, magnification from 1:2 to infinity (short telephoto) and magnification from 1:1 to 1:2 (macro)…
