For me, third-party lenses have always suffered from being a step behind their full-size counterparts. I bought this lens because I didn't have $1,000 for a 105mm Nikkor that I wanted but couldn't afford. I put this lens on my Nikon D7000 and shot everything from flowers to bugs to portraits. Whether on a tripod, stopped down, or wide open and handheld, the images were just, uh, uh. I readily admit that I may have received a bad copy. I wanted to like it enough to keep it but to be honest it didn't take much better pictures than the Canon 500D macro lens which I use with the Nikkor 55-300 lens so it's back. My advice to anyone serious about macro/close-up photography is to save up for the best lens you can find. Keep in mind that in most cases you can rent before you buy to see if the lens is right for you, your camera, and your shooting style. This one, while well made and with decent glass, just wasn't for me.
