Review on πŸ”§ Dorman 911-504 Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid for Infiniti and Nissan Models by Leo Govindan

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works well for exhaust and emissions

Bought this part to solve a CEL that has been bugging me for weeks, DTC p0456 very small leak in EVAP system. These very small leaks are usually due to loose gas caps, but this leak kept reappearing no matter how hard I tightened the gas cap, so I researched online and found that Nissan, among others, is prone to this valve failure vent control. The part hangs from a charcoal canister under the rear passenger side of my Murano 09 and is accessible without a lift. I pulled out my stock unit, no tools required, cleaned it and checked the spring which moved slightly. I then checked the electrical connections for continuity and this was confirmed. Well then I hooked up a 12 volt power supply to it and---nothing, the solenoid was dead. Bingo.Nissan apparently had a lot of problems with this in different vehicles and even rebuilt the unit a few times. This Dorman piece is very similar to Nissan's latest redesign, but costs about half as much. The old version is still available, Dorman part number 911-503, about fifteen bucks less, but figured I might as well upgrade while I'm at it. The old part was 100% plastic, the new version has a metal body encased in a plastic shell, presumably to make it more durable and resistant to damage. Installing the new part took some effort. The rubber o-ring doesn't seem to want to compress enough for the part to slide and snap into the charcoal filter. After some fumbling and swearing, I finally lubricated the o-ring and the thing slid right in. A quarter turn to the right, reattach the hose and electrical connector and you're done. I cleared my DTCs and drove the car for a bit and then left it for a while so it could do an EVAP pressure test. A few hours later I checked and all the monitors showed willingness to work with no codes. The problem is solved. Don't worry about ordering a non-OEM part, this Dorman unit appears to be well built and really couldn't be any worse than the faulty Nissan unit. One complaint and it has more to do with Revain's shipping policy. . Most items I order online that ship from Southern California to my home in Northern California take no longer than 1 or 2 days to ship, whether I choose economy ground shipping or something more expensive. But Revain Economy Shipping took 8 full days to deliver this item. I could walk home from Los Angeles in 8 days wearing this product. It's like they are delaying and delivering slowly on purpose because I live too close to the delivery point and they want me to pay extra for express delivery. I don't know of any other dealer who offers something like this.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
