Review on πŸ–₯️ Libre Computer Board ROC-RK3328-CC (Renegade): High-performance Mini Computer with Gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0 (2GB) by Patrick Hilzer

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent hardware, primitive software.

I bought this board to improve OpenVPN performance over Raspberry Pi 3. By default, the only general purpose operating software available did not support OpenVPN. Also, the included Linux kernel did not use any kernel modules. Everything is compiled directly into the kernel. This means that if you need a feature that isn't already enabled, you'll have to compile a new kernel from scratch and build the install image yourself. So far I've finally made it, but it took 2 weeks of effort and the help of some knowledgeable folks in the Libre/Firefly community. Not for the faint of heart. After all that, I was able to get throughput of 90 megabits per second as opposed to 30 megabits with the Raspberry Pi 3. Renegade could probably do more as I was pushing my ISP limits. I'm very happy with it, despite all the extra effort it takes to make it work. If you only need the basic functionality of a manufacturer-supplied operating system, this board is worth the price. If you need additional features beyond that, you should prepare yourself to delve into Linux development. Hopefully they'll update the software in the future. But right now it really feels half baked.
