The first thing to understand is that the long center pin goes to the load - which is what you want to turn on and off. One of the side pins is for power (battery or AC adapter), the other side pin is for ground. If you accidentally connect power or ground to the center pin, you could get a short! The switch works fine, but the pin layout is different than most automotive backlit switches. The switch looks good except for the plastic nut holding it in place at the back. The nut is very cheap. When I tried to pull it tighter it missed the thread.
