I used it as a pre-filter with an external filter like many others here. I think my experience is different because I've used different inlet pre-filters. I bought this because the guppies were breeding and could suck the fry in and not for extra filtration so I like that it was extra but to my surprise I noticed my tank is a lot cleaner and for under $5 this was a great quick fix my future roast. However, since the sponge is too rough, it is quite difficult for them to clean the sponge when it is removed. Small particles quickly dissipate when I lift the sponge. I always had to turn on the vacuum cleaner when I was servicing it. I have had other pre-filters in the past, home made, home and cooperative aquariums. Compared to the inlet filter, the Aquarium Co-ops is much better at holding out debris when serviced - it was just the amount of coarse SO that cost about $5 more. I would go with the inlet sponge which is of course smaller but still safe and greatly reduces my workload. Finally, this sponge was made for the pond filter, which captures much larger particles than ever in closed pools. I would forgo the extra amount to get another aquarium pre-filter. To top it off, it has an open hole through and through, you need to plug it with another sponge.
