First of all, I received this product in exchange for my unbiased and honest review. Thank you Haybright. A few years ago we moved into a new house and my wife remodeled the basement with the best lighting available at the time, which was a cluster of (11) 65w built-in incandescent (incandescent) bulbs. They worked well but used a lot of energy (expensive) and generated a lot of heat (normal in winter, not summer). When I saw them on Vine I thought they were a reasonable alternative. I hope I made a wise choice because this upgrade has no turning back. So these are my observations and warnings: • Modernization? If you upgrade, make sure you can do it. I struggled with the first light, how do I get it out, does the Heybright fit, can I get to the old connections, how do I plug it in... all sorts of little problems. I finally settled on the procedure, each lamp took about 20 minutes but I'm wondering if this needs to be coded. When it matters. And like I said, I practically destroyed the old lanterns, so it's done. • temperature? Get the right guy. I think Haybright's page implies that the light can be switched between three temperatures - 3k, 4k and 5k - which is fairly common for modern LEDs. Actually these are three different models and I accidentally got 5k, very blue. I'm not crazy about 5k but the wife says it's ok (for her sewing). And the light output is amazing, very bright. May need a dimmer • Wire nuts? The cable connectors they provide are a problem. Essentially, the connector has three holes for wires, connected internally by a spring-loaded metal jumper. (I tried to provide some photos.) The stripped wire is inserted into the hole, the metal bridge clamps and holds the wire, and the bridge provides an electrical path for the clamped wires. I've used this style in the industry before and there have been errors: if the wires aren't the same size, or stranded versus solid etc - often likely (Romex!) - the bridge is clamped unevenly, the wires are loose (bad conductors ), the bridge heats up due to loose contacts and sparks fly over time. They also don't specify what wire sizes are safe to use or how much to strip. This is where I might have tinned my input power wires (which were loosely twisted) or even better, I should have used some wire nuts. We will see. If you use them, be sure to pull the wires after installation to make sure they are connected. • Short cables? The wires from the AC/DC converter are unusually short, 2 inches at most. (I think one of them was 1.5 inches). This makes wiring a bit trickier when working overhead in tight spaces, especially when using solid Romex cable in the junction box. " x 1.3". This is pretty small, especially if you're using hard (solid) wire. If you need proper tension braces, the cutouts are 7/8" on either side. • Big pillows? The lamp has round foam cushions that are placed between the ceiling and the lamp. These cushions are often too large, protruding behind the light fixture is installed. • Bad documentation? Charts in the document...well, I needed a magnifying glass. And as mentioned, very little use of ports, critical operation. • $98 for 12? Pretty good price. Take away! Overall for now would give it 3 stars The connectors are the most questionable to me and the little junction box I would give 4 if they supplied nuts for the wires. I can't say anything about durability. The color temperature is my fault, but they could be crisper a sign of questionable quality control. But I will say that the light output is amazing. I hope it lasts.
