Review on πŸ“· High-performance Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Lens: Ideal Zoom for Canon SLR Cameras by Anthony Shields

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I'll explain below, but if you don't read past this sentence, BUY THIS LENS (and if possible, buy it used!).

later I'll start by saying I've had all three current Canon lenses at a standard zoom: 24-105 f4 L IS, 24-70 f2.8 L II and this one is 24-70 f4 LIS. I'll explain it below, but if you read no further than this sentence, just buy this lens (and buy it if you can!). I'm a gear freak and having shot with all three lenses I can honestly say that this lens is the best of all worlds when you can only carry one lens around. Sure it can't do portraits as well as the 24-70 f2.8 L II, but in almost every other situation since I shoot between f4 and f5.6 most of the time the IS and size advantage will be greater than it worth.compensate for the lack of f2.8. Not to mention that this f5.6 lens is just as sharp as the f2.8 L II! Compared to 24-105 f4 L IS, this is carnage. Simply put, this lens is smaller, sharper, has a better stabilization system and zoom lock. Given how much sharper this lens is than the 24-105 (at least the one I had), the extra zoom is easily negated by the ability to crop the zoom OR just a few steps closer (I'm an old fixed lens). focal length "zoom with feet" type). If that's not enough and you spend most of your time over 70mm, you should just get one of the great 70-200s or the older 80-200s. I promise they will all serve you better than 24-105. Speaking of zoomlock, the 24-105 is pretty prone to barrel slippage when walking around, I never thought lenslock would make a huge difference, but since I've known the 24-105 it "zooms out" all the time while doing so. . It was a pain in the ass, the built in zoom lock on the 24-70 is fine. Frankly, Canon made the mistake of not including a single lens with the 24-105. I bought this lens to use as a 'running' lens on my 6D for everyday photography, the 24-70 f4 comes into play and fills the role perfectly. I used to use 24-105, but the size and lack of zoom lock was unbearable for me, and the sharp drop in sharpness with each switch from 24-70 f2.8 was too painful. Now I don't have to worry anymore. When I'm not shooting people or low light, the 2.8 can stay in my pocket and I carry f4 with me.
