Bags are good for air travel with a little improvement

My wife and I travel a lot around the world on our touring bikes (700 bikes) and these bags suit us very well. I reinforced the bottom outside with 1/2" plywood and used a plywood/PVC piping system to secure the bikes firmly in the bag with the drive sprocket hanging just off the bottom. We also use self-inflating sleeping pads for extra protection. The key is to ensure the entire package weighs no more than 50 pounds so it can be taken as luggage. So far we haven't experienced any damage to the bikes and haven't spent a penny on our bike air travel, but it makes sense to check with the airlines before you travel. Alaska Air and British Air have very cyclist-friendly policies. Some others do the same and more all the time. Email me (pfkeithly@gmail.com) if you want to see some pictures of our system.
