I use it on a tripod, alone or on the magnetic base that usually comes with lasers. often all you need is an angle to check the plumb where you don't really need it but to create sets of parallel lines or rectangular floorplans as I have to do renovations on old houses only superficially familiar with the concepts of area or Lot, this little fellow is priceless. Mind you, you're only buying about 0.75 inches of travel in the X and Z axes, but I haven't had much trouble getting close to that just by sliding the tripod. For an additional $30 you can also cover the vertical DOFs, but I don't need what I had just yet.
