I bought an old fat PS2 for myself as a graduation present back in 2003 as a used one is only a few bucks more than a DVD player and I didn't have one. I got myself a fat PS2 precisely because it was cheaper and I wanted to mod it. I never bothered to modchip it and due to life circumstances I had to put the thing away. My games have been stolen and you can't find cheap PS2 games on Gamestop or anything like that anymore, so they just sit there. I happened upon a YouTube video showing how to programmatically mod your PS2 using an old network adapter and IDE hard drive, which eventually led me to discover this. I bought this and a basic 500 gigabyte hard drive and got to work. My god, this is incredible stuff. Installation was a little shaky, but there are detailed step-by-step instructions online for formatting your hard drive for PS2 work and programming. I've played a hundred games on it since I was a kid and it remains a staple in the living room, connected to the big screen TV and my roommates, and I play it several times a week. Buy component cables (or a PS2 to HDMI adapter), a couple of wireless controllers, and a couple of high-capacity memory cards, and you're good to go. One of the best things about the PS2 community is that almost every PS2 game has the patches you need. can be applied to their ISO files to give them true widescreen resolution. It was crazy playing OG Kingdom Hearts and Budokai 3 in widescreen aspect ratio. So yes, it took me 15 years to do this, but I finally modded my PS2! However, there are a few issues to consider. - This thing doesn't fit into the back of the PS2 as well as the PSU - The screws are plastic but can easily be turned with a coin - The SATA connector looks a little flimsy. It's not a design flaw as there are no rails inside the PS2 to hold the hard drive in place and there is plenty of room to move it around. After installation, try to move the PS2 as little as possible as the hard drive will bend and this can put extra stress on the SATA connector. This version doesn't have a fake network connector on the back, but the plastic has a stamp for it - for some reason it wasn't cut out. Not a big deal, but I would have either preferred a fake network connector for aesthetics, or not stamped anything on the plastic at all. All in all, if you have an old PS2, this is the perfect way to spruce it up. I fell in love all over again with this generation of games.
