Our original was past its life so we ordered this one. In fact, I like it a lot better than the original. At the top, the girth is greatly reduced, but the point continues for a fraction of an inch. To the casual viewer, this would likely go unnoticed. However, if you roast and cook a lot of meat like I do, you'll quickly find that this design allows the probe to gently penetrate the meat without any effort. The probe almost retracts into the flesh, making it much easier to pierce and remove the flesh. In the past I have had to use forceps to hold the flesh in place when inserting and removing the probe. Trust me, this subtle design change makes a huge difference in cooking.
