This article is AWESOME!

I have a box full of scanners, Bluetooth OBD connectors and a laptop full of OEM and aftermarket software. They all meet the requirements and some can do a lot more than this scanner BUT they are PITA to use or very limited compared to what this device does. I got this because my E39 has sporadic starting problems. I ran a battery of old-school electrical tests and the problem remained elusive. I got this device, downloaded and connected the BMW module. I saved and cleared a bunch of codes (usually for a 17 year old car) and started looking into the immobilizer module. I go in and click on about 5 items related to key codes and starter lock values and I go to the races. The first day the car starts every time, so since it doesn't use much power I leave it plugged in. The next day it says no connection but I can quickly select my 5 items again and it's ready for monitoring. On the second attempt to start I see that the key id is correct (key 7) but its code is wrong so the starter is blocked. I take another key (3) and the car starts immediately. Turn it off and insert the first key (7) and it will start. So I know the problem is in the immobilizer key coding process, not the wiring, with the possible exception of the antenna coil. A simple solution might be to remove the key completely and far enough away to be recognized when reinserted, or maybe have two keys, or remove the chips from the keys and leave a few chips nearby. It's still too early to tell. If you try to enter the wrong key code several times, the immobilizer seems to stop the boot process for a while. Trying to fix this without understanding the importance of the immobilizer was maddening. All that remains now is to figure out what sequence of events causes the no-start condition. Leaving the laptop on and running for a period of time is very difficult and could result in a broken window and the laptop being stolen! Well done Auto!
