On first use, the heater began to emit smoke from the burning plastic on the top of the unit, which is an uncertain defect. I had to turn the heating outside to prevent additional smoke from entering my home. Upon further investigation, it was found that plastic shavings from the vent holes at the top of the device had been poorly drilled into each of the recessed rectangular inserts, causing the plastic shavings to land on top of the upper metal heat shield. The chips eventually burned out after running the heater outside, but there was a burning smell in the unit afterwards. After a few hours, the odor wore off, but that's still an issue that the manufacturer needs to address through better quality control. Also, the heater cannot be used at high settings. The thermal overload protection would kick in after about a minute and shut down the device until it cooled to a safe temperature, which took over two hours. The ambient temperature during the overheat was around 60 degrees, so it shouldn't have worked. It is quite obvious that the overheating issue is the lack of ventilation at the top of the heater, which is common with all similar infrared heaters I have purchased. so this is a major design constraint that limits the practical use of a potentially good heater. The oscillation function is also quite noisy as you can hear the constant grinding of the gears, especially when it changes direction. This is a weak implementation of a great feature. Despite these apparent flaws and design limitations, when I set it on low (250W), the heater produced a very comfortable and large heating surface for such a low power consumption, and I credit the carbon heating element for being incredibly efficient with the oscillating Heat distribution, so this heater has a lot of potential, especially given its very compact size, to serve both small and large spaces. If these issues get fixed I think this will be the winner. Until then I would not recommend this heater.
