From a dentist friend

I'm not a dentist but my friend is. He wrote the following. I was convinced enough to try CariFree: look for a toothpaste that offers maximum protection to reduce the risk of tooth decay, neutralizes acidity to reduce erosion, and is non-abrasive so we don't wear down our teeth while brushing . We have a metric called Relative Dentin Abrasiveness (RDA) that measures how abrasive our toothpaste is on our teeth. The ADA recommended limit is an RDA of 200, the FDA limit is 250, and our recommended limit based on scientific research is an RDA of 70 (low abrasion). Anything rougher and you're wearing away the tooth structure by brushing your teeth. Another consideration with over-the-counter toothpastes is that most of them are acidic (same goes for mouthwash). They are acidic to extend the shelf life of the product. It's bad for your teeth! The only product I know of that contains multiple mouthguard ingredients is a toothpaste called CTx 4 Gel by CariFree. This gel is non-abrasive, has a high pH to neutralize acid, contains microscopic minerals, which are the building blocks of tooth enamel, and a product called xylitol, a bactericidal sweetener that doesn't fight tooth decay and salivation can improve. This product will tip the scales for many of my high risk patients. Here's a list of some pretty good OTC products I recommend: RDA ProductRegular Baking Soda 7Arm & Hammer Tooth Powder 8CariFree CTx 4 Gel 18.5Sensodyne Pronamel 34Arm & Hammer Dental Care 35Arm & Hammer Dental Care Sensitive 48Crest with Scope 51Rembrandt Original 53Biotene Gel 60Colgate Regular 68Colgate Total 70This list is not exhaustive. Anything that talks about whitening or tartar control is generally not suitable for use due to its high abrasiveness. And now the most interesting. The risk of tooth decay, gum disease or functional loss of tooth structure varies from person to person. Some people have problems with tooth decay while others have problems with gum disease. Only 1% of my patients have a perfectly healthy mouth with no significant risk. So while a certain toothpaste may be enough to protect a person's teeth, their spouse may need additional protection. To that end, all of my specific recommendations are specific to the individual patient.
