In reviews of these "fermometers" I've seen reports of people having trouble breaking them when they got wet. Looking for more information, I found that these items break after being submerged in water. Water gets under the liquid crystal cells of the display and destroys it. However, if you place them outside of the fermenter buckets, there's little to no reason for them to get wet unless your beer explodes. To clean them, simply wipe with a damp cloth, just like the outside of a bucket. Even if your drink explodes, a meager $4 for one is the least of your worries.
