Most piston dial indicators have a measuring range of 1 inch. This is fine for most applications, but when you need a significantly longer stroke, finding the right caliber is not easy. The Mitutoyo 3058SB-11 has a 50 mm (2 inch) stroke and is available in both metric and inch pitches. I use this as the X-axis reading of my small milling machine to rule out backlash errors. Since all of the parts I make are 1-2 inches long, this dial indicator provides an accurate solution at a reasonable price. I mounted it with a magnetic base to make it easy to move for different work environments.
