Review on Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X Lens by Petar Lyubenov ᠌

Valuable purchase, nothing but pluses!

A lens that became "legendary" long before the start of the sale :) More than 2 years of waiting since the first show, rumors, comnstant uncertainty about the release date and characteristics turned it into a legend. It seemed to be there (prototypes, a bunch of pre-production lenses at all sorts of events where Canon handed them out for temporary testing to trusted photographers), but it didn’t seem to exist. And no one said anything, no real "full-size" examples of pictures from it. . But on May 14, 2022, a miracle happened, and the lens came out, although the most gloomy expectations for its price came true. . But, having bought it, I must admit - it's worth it. Super telezoom with picture quality indistinguishable from serious super telefixes; an extender that turns on and off with one click of the pedal (according to the manual, you have to wait until the stub iscommpletely turned off to switch the extender, but this is not long); the ability to use external extenders on it together or instead of the internal one, gettingcommpletely outrageous focal lengths (1.4x + 1.4x = 392-784 f / 8, 2x = 400-800 f / 8, 1.4x + 2x = 560-1120 f /11), and at the same time the picture reduces sharpness quite acceptable. The stub allows you to shoot handheld at such focal lengths at sufficiently slow shutter speeds. Shooting examples: 400-800 (there is an external 2x III), iso400, 1/200, f/8, 620mm, AF works on the center point - . jpg 560-1120 (internal 1.4x and external 2x III work), iso6400, 1/400, f/11, 1120mm, manual focus in the center of the frame, full-size camera jpeg . jpg

Pros
  • Exceptionally high image quality, sharpness at the level of EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, moderate weight (with such dimensions! ), built-in 1.4x extender, it is possible to use external extenders along with the internal one, excellent stabilizer, almost 5 stops.
Cons
  • Price, but what did you want for such a unique lens? :)
