I don't know, I might be allergic to studs in the walls. I've literally had 4 different types of spike finders and haven't had any luck with any of them. I will say that it was the most reliable of the 4, but you should know that its "mechanism" is a magnet, so it will trip on any magnetic surface. So it could be a wire, junction box, nail (hopefully), etc., but if the nail isn't centered on the stud, then you've screwed everything up, etc. There's plenty of room for error for those of us. who do not tend to build.
